Physical Education
Intent
We will provide all children with high quality PE opportunities, whilst encouraging the children to achieve their potential as well as developing physically active and healthy habits for life. PE, as a subject, is a driver in the development of physical literacy, which promotes confidence, motivation, knowledge and understanding.
What does PE look like in our school?
At Stickney Primary, we recognise the need to encourage children to be physically active and we understand the importance that activity can have, not only physically, but on pupils’ mental health and emotional well-being. We believe it is important for the children to have access to a wide range of activities with a view that if the children enjoy being active and are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a more physically active and healthy lifestyle. Experience of a range of sports also helps the children to develop the confidence, tolerance and appreciation of their own and others strengths as well as weaknesses.
Throughout the school, we use PE Planning to support our delivery of high-quality teaching and learning opportunities which are accessible for all and allow individuals to be successful, as well as excel in competitive sports. We know that opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of a team, and learn key life values and skills such as resilience, communication and leadership.
- Pupils at Stickney Primary School participate in PE and sporting activities twice a week.
- PE is taught as an area of learning in its own right and it is integrated, where possible, with other curriculum areas.
- In EYFS, a structured PE lesson occurs weekly with additional time also being active in the large outdoor area.
- PE lessons ensure that children have fun and experience success in sport, as well as providing the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development. Pupils secure and build on a range of skills, learn to understand basic rules and experience positive competition; these skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
- Learning opportunities are matched to the ability of the children, raising pupil’s health and fitness levels, improving skills and developing resilience and perseverance.
- Pupils are physically active during morning and lunchtime breaks..
- Throughout the year, a timetable of sports clubs are led by school staff after school. These are used to engage children in physical activity and include a range of sports: dance football and cross-country.
- Stickney Primary is also part of the local School Sports Partnership which allows pupils to have the opportunity to perform competitively against other local schools in a range of sporting events.
At Stickney Primary, we also have JB Sport coaches come into our school to deliver PE lessons and extra sport activities such as Balanceability and First Aid training.
