Hooked on Books
Upon completing the RWI Phonics stages, children are able to read accurately and fluently and have developed basic comprehension skills. Reading lessons at this stage begin to focus more heavily on developing children's reading comprehension. This is taught using Jane Considine's Hooked on Books approach.
Children explore text in 'Book Talk' sessions, using the lenses of the Reading Rainbow. During lessons they also listen to the teacher model how to 'think like a reader', before being expected to demonstrate these skills independently.
The Reading Rainbow supports the learning of the different reading competancies and helps to develop understanding.
