Design Technology

Intent

Design and technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Therefore, we want the children at Stickney Primary School, to develop their imagination, their critical thinking and their understanding of the world around them through their love of Design and Technology.

We aim for our children to question and think innovatively about the world around them in order to design and develop their own products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values, along with being inspired from designers, chefs, architects and engineers.

It is our aim to create strong cross curricular links with other subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Computing, and Art. We want Design and Technology to prepare our children, to give them the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they need to be successful in later life.

'Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is knowing which ones to keep.'

Long Term Plan

How you can help support your child's development in DT at home

  • Cook and bake together
  • Discuss the importance of healthy eating
  • Look at the seasonality of food, what is in season at local farm shops.
  • Create using some junk modelling - anything you like, from a car to a castle!
  • Make a birthday or greetings card for someone that has moving parts, like a pop up element or a sliding, lever or wheel mechanism.
  • Practice some sewing techniques and skills.
  • Get those tools out and do some woodwork- you could make a bug hotel or a bird table!
